Setting the Table For Lunch

Posted by on Aug 24, 2012 in Entertaining, Hospitality | Comments Off on Setting the Table For Lunch

Recently, I’ve been trying to use my trifle bowl for more then just trifle.  When I had a friend over for lunch a few weeks back, our menu was taco salad with chips and salsa. For dessert, we had chocolate covered strawberries.

Since I don’t have a chips and salsa bowl, I decided to use my trifle bowl as the chip bowl and footed dessert dishes as individual bowls for salsa. I was happy with using those two things because yet again I love using things that I have on hand. Why buy something specifically marketed for chips and salsa when you have perfectly good trifle bowl just lying around! :)

To help you set the table with great etiquette, here is a way to set your table for your next luncheon. I’m not always about formal etiquette and table decoration but it is so much fun to make an enjoyable table scape for friends! Especially, one you can eat from! :)

How do you set the table when you have friends over? What items do you have in your kitchen that you can use for another purpose?

4th of July – Entertaining

Posted by on Jul 3, 2012 in Entertaining | Comments Off on 4th of July – Entertaining

It’s just a day before the 4th of July and you are probably getting ready to fire up the barbeque and watch a spectacular firework show!  We are looking forward to hanging out as a family and enjoying the 4th of July.

To keep with the festivities of red, white and blue.  I created this very simple fruit platter that is simple and classic. These blueberry and raspberry skewers are perfect as a healthy appetizer or add them to your favorite summer time drink: sparkling lemonade or a glass of white wine.

In just ten minutes you to can have a simple fruit platter to add to your 4th of July festivities.

Supplies and Ingredients

  • Toothpicks
  • Raspberries
  • Blueberries
  • Your favorite serving platter

Place one raspberry in the center of a tooth pick.  Then put two blueberries on each end. Fill your platter with as many as you’d like.

I used one cup of each raspberries and blueberries to make mine.  Depending on the size of your platter you may need more or less.

Okay now its your turn.  Tell me, what is your favorite 4th of July appetizer?

Fire Up the Grill for Breakfast

Posted by on May 25, 2012 in Breakfast, Entertaining | 2 comments

I absolutely love breakfast.  There is something about eggs, fresh bread or pancakes that just make me very happy about breakfast.

Last weekend we didn’t have electricity in our house because they were not able to turn it on until Monday.  We stayed in a hotel most of the weekend, but by Sunday night we were ready to sleep in our own bed and say goodbye to the hotel beds and continental breakfasts!  We got out our camping supplies: cast iron skillet, spatula, and lantern.

Sunday night we enjoyed grilled burgers and veggies. You can see Little Buddy is so excited about dinner!

Come Monday morning though it was time for breakfast. Bring on breakfast! My husband usually does the barbecuing around here, but I thought I’d take my first attempt to cook breakfast on the BBQ.

What I really enjoyed about making breakfast on Monday was cooking in the rain. It was absolutely beautiful out.  The smell of the rain and the sound it made on the trees was relaxing. I put up the umbrella over the BBQ, turned it on, placed the skillet on the grill to warm up and started cooking.

I whipped up some bacon, scrambled eggs and pancakes all on the BBQ.

It did take a little longer to make breakfast this way oppose to the stove, but it was a fun way to change up the breakfast routine. I think I can see myself trying out some more recipes on the grill!

Since this weekend is Memorial Day Weekend, try making breakfast on the BBQ. It’s a lot fun and really easy! :)

Have you ever made breakfast on the BBQ? What have you made before?

Quick Get Together

Posted by on Mar 11, 2012 in Entertaining | Comments Off on Quick Get Together

When was the last time you had your friends over for dinner?

I’ve always been about planning and details when it comes to get together and parties.  Although, I think those have their place, I have come to a reality that “It’s okay” you dont’ have to plan anything extravagent or have perfect details.  To have a great time with friends and family it’s not about details, it’s about time together!

Last weekend, late in the morning, my husband had a great idea to have our friends over for a BBQ.  It worked out great,  everyone was able to come over on such short notice.

Here are four things I found were super helpful when planning a get together really fast!

1.  Use what you have on hand, if possible.

Look in your fridge, freezer or pantry and see what you have on hand.  Check out for finding recipes with what you have on hand.  If you need to go to the store, review the sale ad before heading out to the store.  You can usually go to the stores website to view it.  Plan your meal around 3 to 5 ingredients.  This will keep your cost down and still make a yummy meal.

2. Plan a simple menu

Don’t make it extravagant, use your favorite recipe that feeds a group.  Here is a couple of recipes that work well for feeding a group, click here and here.  For the menu: an appetizer, main dish, a side dish and light dessert, is likely all you need.

3. Have your guest bring a dish

Most people love being able to bring something.  Whether they make it from scratch or pick it up at the store.  It helps you out and you get to try something new!  If you have 2 to 3 friends coming over you are probably only going to make one dish!

4. Keep Cleaning Simple

Ask your spouse to help do a quick pick up.  Take 20 minutes at the most.  Do a quick bathroom clean up and pick up any miscellaneous things around the house.  It’s not the time to deep clean.  Do your friends or family really care if you haven’t dusted or vacuumed?  They probably will not even notice and if they do, does it really matter?! :)

So, what are you waiting for!  Have your friends or family over today!

Do you have any tips for having a quick get together?  Share them in the comments!
